Feeding Guide
From first sip to first bite — everything you need to know about feeding your baby at every stage.
Stage 1 — Newborn to 3 Months
🍼 First Feeds
What your baby needs: Newborns feed every 2–3 hours. Their feeding instincts are strong — the key is finding a bottle that mimics the natural breast as closely as possible to avoid nipple confusion.
Dodo Baby recommendation:
- Dodo Baby Glass Feeding Bottle with XS Nipple Extension (0–1 months)
- Move to S Nipple Extension at 1–3 months
- Our soft latch nipple mimics the natural breast for a smoother transition
Tips for this stage:
- Always sterilise bottles before first use and after every feed
- Feed on demand — follow your baby’s hunger cues, not the clock
- Hold your baby at a 45-degree angle during feeds to reduce air intake
- Burp after every feed to release trapped air
Stage 2 — 3 to 6 Months
🍼 Growing Sips
What your baby needs: Your baby is growing fast and feeding volumes are increasing. Flow rate becomes important — too slow causes frustration, too fast causes gulping and colic.
Dodo Baby recommendation:
- Dodo Baby Silicone Feeding Bottle 150ml with Slow Flow Nipple (pre-installed)
- Our dual anti-colic vents reduce gas and fussiness during feeds
- Our 360° gravity straw means no tilting — less air, less colic
Tips for this stage:
- Watch for feeding cues — rooting, sucking fists, turning head
- If your baby gulps, chokes or seems gassy — consider a slower flow nipple
- If your baby seems frustrated or takes very long to feed — consider a faster flow
- Continue sterilising until 6 months
Stage 3 — 6 Months
🥣 Hello Solids — Starting Weaning
What your baby needs: Six months is a huge milestone — your baby is ready for solids. This stage is about exploration, not nutrition. Milk remains the primary food source. Keep it fun, low pressure and messy.
Dodo Baby recommendation:
- Start with our Silicone Weaning Spoon — soft, flexible tip is gentle on sensitive gums
- Introduce our Silicone Suction Bowl — the non-slip base keeps it anchored during excited little hands
- Our Catch-All Bib catches everything — and there will be a lot to catch
Tips for this stage:
- Start with single-ingredient purees — sweet potato, banana, avocado
- Offer solids once a day to begin with, at a time when your baby is happy and alert
- Never force feed — if they turn away, stop and try again tomorrow
- Expect most food to end up everywhere except their mouth — that’s completely normal
- Always supervise during feeding
Stage 4 — 7 to 9 Months
🥄 Building Skills
What your baby needs: Your baby is developing motor skills rapidly. Introducing textured foods and self-feeding tools at this stage supports development and builds confidence at mealtimes.
Dodo Baby recommendation:
- Introduce our Silicone Spoon & Fork Set — ergonomically designed for small hands
- Add our Silicone Suction Plate — divided sections keep foods separate for curious eaters
- Our Silicone Sippy Cup introduces independent drinking — with a soft spout safe for developing gums
Tips for this stage:
- Offer soft finger foods alongside purees — banana slices, steamed carrot sticks, soft cheese
- Let your baby play with their food — sensory exploration is part of learning
- Introduce a cup alongside the bottle to begin transition
- Increase texture gradually — from smooth to mashed to soft lumps
Stage 5 — 9 to 12 Months
🍽 Joining the Table
What your baby needs: Your baby is ready to join family mealtimes. Variety, texture and independence are the focus. This is also when many parents begin transitioning away from bottles.
Dodo Baby recommendation:
- Full Dodo Baby Weaning Set — plate, bowl, sippy cup, cutlery, bib
- Silicone Bottle 250ml with Fast Flow Nipple for bottle feeds
- Dino Soothe Teether for teething discomfort during this stage
Tips for this stage:
- Eat together as a family as often as possible — babies learn by watching
- Offer 3 meals a day with 1–2 healthy snacks
- Reduce bottle feeds gradually and increase cup use
- Introduce a wider variety of flavours and textures
- Always cut food into small, manageable pieces
