When Should I Replace Baby Bottle Nipples?

26 May, 2026 3 mins read

As a parent, you likely keep a close eye on the expiration dates of your baby’s formula or the freshness of their purees. But when was the last time you checked the "expiration" of their bottle nipples?

Bottle nipples are the most used—and abused—part of your feeding gear. Between constant suction, high-heat sterilization, and the emergence of tiny teeth, they don't last forever. Using a worn-out nipple can lead to feeding frustration, gas, or even choking hazards.

The General Timeline: 2 to 3 Months

Even if a nipple looks perfect to the naked eye, the material (whether silicone or latex) begins to break down after repeated use and cleaning. The general expert recommendation is to replace them every 2 to 3 months.

However, your baby might give you "early warning signs" that it's time for a change.

3 Signs It’s Time to Replace Immediately

1. Visible Wear and Tear

Check the nipples every time you wash them. Look for:

  • Thinning or Tearing: If the silicone feels sticky, "gummy," or looks unusually thin in certain spots, it’s a sign the material is failing.

  • Discoloration: If a clear nipple becomes cloudy or yellowed, it’s time to toss it.

  • Cracks: Any visible crack is a place where bacteria can hide and a piece of silicone could potentially break off.

2. Change in Milk Flow

If the milk is coming out too fast (dripping steadily without suction) or too slow (the baby is working incredibly hard but getting nothing), the nipple hole has likely been compromised. A hole that has stretched too large can cause a baby to gag or choke, while a blocked or collapsed nipple leads to air intake and colic.

3. The "Stage" Transition

Sometimes the nipple is perfectly fine, but your baby has outgrown it. If your baby is taking longer than 20 minutes to finish a bottle, acting frustrated during feeds, or falling asleep before they are full, they likely need a faster flow rate (Stage 2 or 3).

Quality You Can Trust

At Dodo Baby, we use only the highest-grade, 100% food-grade silicone for our nipples. Because our silicone is more resilient than standard latex, it maintains its shape and "bite-resistance" longer.

However, safety is our priority.

  • Integrated Anti-Colic Vents: Our nipples feature a precision vent. If you notice the vent isn't "bubbling" as it should, or if the nipple is collapsing during a feed, it’s a sign that either the vent is blocked or the silicone has lost its structural integrity.

  • Universal Fit: We offer replacement nipples in various flow stages that fit perfectly onto both our Silicone Feeding Bottles and our Premium Glass Bottles.

  • Easy Inspection: Because Dodo Baby nipples are crystal clear and high-quality, it’s easy for you to spot any thinning or residue during your daily cleaning with the Dodo 4-in-1 Cleaning Brush.

Don't wait for a tear to happen. Setting a reminder on your phone every two months to refresh your Dodo Baby nipples ensures your baby always has the safest, most comfortable feeding experience possible.

Parental Tip: To make your nipples last longer, avoid using harsh, abrasive sponges. Our soft silicone nipple brush is designed to clean effectively without causing micro-tears in the delicate silicone!
