The "Is He Full?" Anxiety
Unlike a bottle where you can see the ounces, breastfeeding can feel like a guessing game. Many parents worry about low supply, but your baby is actually a very efficient communicator.
Look for the Cues (Not the Clock)
Waiting for a baby to cry is actually a "late" hunger cue. Look for these Early Hunger Cues instead:
-
Rooting: Turning the head toward your chest or hand.
-
Lip Smacking: Making sucking noises or sticking their tongue out.
-
Hands to Mouth: Sucking on fingers or fists.
The "Wet Diaper" Math
The most reliable way to know your baby is getting enough milk in 2026 is by monitoring their output:
-
Days 1–2: At least 1–2 wet diapers.
-
Day 5 onwards: At least 6 to 8 heavy wet diapers and 3+ yellow, seedy stools. If your baby is meeting these milestones and gaining weight on their growth chart, your supply is likely perfect!
