How to Transition Your Baby from Breast to Bottle Without the Stress

26 May, 2026 3 mins read

Transitioning from the breast to a bottle is a significant milestone, but for many parents, it feels like a battle of wills. Whether you are returning to work, wanting to involve your partner in feeding, or simply looking for more flexibility, the "bottle rejection" phase can be frustrating.

The key to a successful transition isn't force; it’s mimicry and timing. Here is the expert-backed roadmap to helping your baby accept the bottle.

1. Timing is Everything: The "Goldilocks" Zone

Don't wait until the baby is starving to introduce the bottle. A hungry baby is an impatient baby. Try offering the bottle when they are calm and "half-full." * The Dream Feed: One of the most effective methods is the "Dream Feed." Offer the bottle while the baby is in a semi-somnolent state (half-asleep). Their natural sucking reflex is strongest then, and they are less likely to overthink the change in texture.

  • The "Not-Mom" Strategy: Babies are smart. If they can smell mom (and her milk), they will wonder why they are being offered a silicone substitute. Have the father or a caregiver offer the first few bottles while mom is in another room or out of the house entirely.

2. Mimic the Experience

The transition is often rejected because the bottle feels "alien." You want to make the bottle experience as close to breastfeeding as possible:

  • Warm the Nipple: Run the silicone nipple under warm water. A cold nipple is a dead giveaway that this isn't "the real thing."

  • The Scent Trick: Dab a little bit of expressed breast milk on the outside of the nipple so the baby recognizes the familiar smell and taste immediately.

  • Paced Feeding: Hold the baby in an upright position and keep the bottle horizontal. This mimics the effort they have to put in at the breast and prevents them from being overwhelmed by a fast flow.

3. Choose the Right Material

Most babies reject bottles because the nipple is too firm or the shape is "off." Look for a nipple that is wide-necked and made of soft, skin-like silicone that allows for a natural latch.

Designed for the "Stubborn" Starter

We know that the hardest part of the transition is the tactile difference. If a bottle feels like hard plastic, a breastfed baby will push it away with their tongue.

This is why we created the Dodo 150ml Silicone Bottle.

Unlike traditional plastic bottles, the entire body of our bottle is made of soft-touch, food-grade silicone. It doesn't just look premium; it feels warm and squishy, much like a mother’s breast.

  • Breast-Like Texture: The ultra-soft silicone nipple mimics the natural flex and movement of nursing, significantly reducing the chances of nipple confusion.

  • The "Squeeze" Factor: Because the bottle body is soft, parents can gently squeeze it to mimic the "let-down" reflex, helping the baby understand that milk is available.

  • Small & Managed: The 150ml size is perfect for early transitions, ensuring the milk stays warm and the bottle is easy for babies to eventually hold themselves.

Transitioning doesn't have to be a tearful process. With a little patience and the right gear from Dodo Baby, you can give your baby the best of both worlds.

Pro Tip: Stay consistent. Offer the bottle for at least 10–15 minutes every day at the same time. Familiarity breeds acceptance!
