Can Babies Use Metal Spoons?

26 May, 2026 3 mins read

In many Indian households, the arrival of a baby often means gifting beautiful silver or stainless steel spoons. While these are wonderful keepsakes and culturally significant, you might notice that your baby isn't quite ready to use them for their daily meals just yet.

If you’re wondering when to make the switch from soft materials to metal, here is why a little patience goes a long way for your baby’s comfort and safety.

Why Wait on the Metal?

1. The "Tender Gum" Factor

In the early months of weaning (around 6–10 months), your baby’s gums are incredibly sensitive. They are likely either in the middle of a teething cycle or just getting used to the sensation of an object in their mouth. Metal is unforgiving. If a hungry or excited baby bites down too hard on a metal spoon, it can cause pain or even minor bruising to their delicate gum tissue.

2. Thermal Sensitivity

Metal is a high conductor of heat. If you are serving warm dal or upma, a metal spoon can heat up very quickly. What feels "just right" to you might feel uncomfortably hot to a baby’s sensitive lips and tongue. Conversely, if the food is cold, the metal can feel shockingly chilly, leading to a negative association with mealtime.

3. The Clinking Distraction

Babies are sensory explorers. The loud "clink" of a metal spoon against a plate or their teeth can be startling or distracting. Soft materials provide a much quieter, more focused feeding experience, which is helpful when you’re trying to get them to concentrate on new flavors.

Safer Alternatives for Early Weaning

  • Silicone: This is the gold standard for beginners. It is soft, flexible, and completely temperature-stable.

  • Wood: As discussed in our guide on wooden handles, wood provides a natural, soft texture that is much gentler than metal.

Protecting Those First Teeth

At Dodo Baby, we prioritize the comfort of your child’s developing mouth. We believe that the transition to "real food" should be as gentle as possible.

Our Dodo Weaning Spoons are designed to be the perfect bridge to solids:

  • Ultra-Soft Silicone Tips: Our spoons are made of 100% food-grade silicone that acts as a cushion for tender gums. Even if your baby decided to use the spoon as a teether (which they often do!), it is perfectly safe and soothing.

  • Temperature Neutral: Unlike metal, our silicone won't absorb heat from the food. It stays comfortable and safe to the touch, feed after feed.

  • Shallow Bowl Design: We’ve engineered the tip to be shallow, ensuring that the baby isn't overwhelmed by too much food at once—a common issue with deeper metal teaspoons.

While those silver spoons are beautiful for the Annaprashan photos, the Dodo Baby range is built for the everyday reality of safe, comfortable, and happy feeding. Save the metal for later, and let’s keep those first bites soft and stress-free!

Parental Tip: Once your toddler has a full set of teeth and has mastered the coordination of self-feeding (usually around 18–24 months), you can slowly introduce child-sized metal cutlery under supervision!
